Can, could və (be) able to
Can modal felindən nəyinsə mümkün olduğunu və ya kiminsə nəyisə etmək bacarığına malik olduğunu bildirmək üçün istifadə edirik. Can məsdər (to hissəciksiz):

We can see the lake from our bedroom window.

Can you speak any foreign languages?

I can come and see you tomorrow if you like.

İnkar formasında can't (= cannot):

I'm afraid I can't come to the party on Friday.

(Be) able to ifadəsini can modal feli əvəzinə işlətmək mümkündür, amma da çox can modal felinin işlənməsinə rast gəlinir:

Are you able to speak any foreign languages?

Amma can modal felinin yalnız iki forması var: can (indiki) və could (keçmiş). Buna görə digər zamanlarda olan cümlələrdə bəzən (be) able to ifadəsini işlətmək labüd olur. Müqayisə edin:

I can't sleep.
I haven't been able to sleep recently. (can modal felinin indiki bitmiş forması yoxdur).

Tom can come tomorrow.

Tom might be able to come tomorrow. (can modal felinin məsdər forması yoxdur).

Could və was able to:

Bəzən could modal feli can modal felinin keçmiş formasıdır.Could modal felini əsasən bu fellərlə işlədirik: see, hear, smell, taste, feel, remember, understand.

When we went into the house, we could smell burning.

She spoke in a very low voice, but I could understand what she said.

Could modal felindən həmçinin kiminsə nəyisə etməyə ümumi bacarığı və ya icazəsi olduğunu bildirmək üçün istifadə edirik:

My grandfather could speak five languages.

We were completely free. We could do what we wanted. (= we were allowed to do...)

Could modal felindən ümumi bacarığı ifadə etmək üçün istifadə edilir, amma əgər müəyyən bir vəziyyətdə baş vermiş hadisədə olan bacarıq haqqında danışırıqsa (müvəqqəti xarakterli) was/were able to və ya managed to ifadələrindən istifadə olunur (could felindən istifadə etmək olmaz):

The fire spread through the building quickly but everybody was able to escape. və ya ...everybody managed to escape. ('could escape' -- yox)

They didn't want to come with us at first but we managed to persuade them. və ya ...we were able to persuade them. ('could persuade' -- yox)

Müqayisə edin:

Jack was an excellent tennis player. He could beat anybody. (= he had the general ability to beat anybody)

Jack and Alf had a game of tennis yesterday. Alf played very well but in the end Jack managed to beat him. və ya...was able to beat him. (= he managed to beat him in this particular game)

İnkar mənada couldn't (could not) modal feli bütün vəziyyətlərdə işlənə bilər:

My grandfather couldn't swim.

We tried hard but we couldn't persuade them to come with us.

Alf played well but he couldn't beat Jack.
